Presbyopia is a common medical condition that causes loss of the ability to see clearly in close proximity. The gradual and progressive condition is the result of lens hardening, and the subsequent decrease in length and the strength of the ciliary muscle that is the reason for an occurrence of accommodation. 

Presbyopia usually manifests around the age of five and nearly everybody, regardless of the quality of their vision throughout their lives, will develop presbyopia some time in their life.

People who are affected usually find themselves using objects (e.g. phones or books) in a distance that is further away from their eyes than they normally do to be able to see the details of them clearly.
